Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is at the center of the debate after several of his emails during the handling of the pandemic were published. Given the controversy of the leaked messages published by BuzzFeed News, several politicians and journalists have called for Fauci’s resignation or dismissal.
Republican senator Rand Paul, who has been one of the main critics of Fauci’s maneuvers and has interrogated him in the Senate exposing several of his inconsistencies, called for his dismissal.
Criticism of the expert is due to his discrepancies on the management of the pandemic. For example, in February 2020 he said that masks were not useful to mitigate the disease, then insisted throughout the year for their use.
In another post the doctor said it is safe to engage in domestic travel despite the pandemic. For conservatives like influencer Will Witt, the emails confirm that the handling of the epidemic was used to control citizens.
“All these leaked emails prove exactly what we knew all along. It wasn’t about safety, it was always about control,” Witt wrote on Twitter.
Similarly, there is also an email thanking Fauci for disproving the theory that the virus could have come from a laboratory.
Calls for an investigation
On the other hand, writer Candace Owens not only called for Dr. Fauci’s resignation, but demanded an investigation into the documents. Agreeing with Owens was host Charlie Kirk.
“Firing Fauci does not go far enough. Anthony Fauci needs to be tried and put into federal prison. He ruined millions of lives via depression, bankruptcy, suicide,” Owens said.
For Ben Shapiro, Fauci’s attitude was because he was defending his institution, rather than following what the science actually said. “The Fauci emails just show that Fauci consistently took the path of least resistance.”
