The Chavista tyranny ruling Venezuela, today headed by dictator Nicolás Maduro, is not going through its best days. Last Sunday, October 17, the extradition to the United States of Alex Saab, a Colombian businessman who served as a frontman for the regime and was a key player in Caracas’ relations with Teheran and Ankara, was confirmed. In addition, former Chavista intelligence chief Hugo “Pollo” Carvajal is revealing secrets of the Venezuelan regime in Spain after he was found again by Spanish authorities after being on the run for two years.

In fact, on October 18, the Spanish portal Okdiario exclusively published some of Hugo Carvajal’s revelations to National Court Judge Manuel García-Castellón. According to the media, the former intelligence chief said that the Chavista regime, through dirty money, was buying wills and financing politicians all over the planet, especially in Europe, Central America, and South America.

The document revealed by Okdiario and delivered by Carvajal to the central court of instruction number six, points out that “the Venezuelan government has illegally financed leftist political movements in the world for at least 15 years, among them, it financed the creation of the Spanish political party PODEMOS”.

Unidas Podemos is a Spanish far-left communist-leaning party founded in 2014. Currently, the leftist party is part of the Spanish coalition government alongside the traditional socialist PSOE party. Its former secretary-general, Pablo Iglesias, is a self-confessed radical Marxist who had to leave the party leadership after several political and electoral failures in 2021. Ione Belarra took Iglesias’ place as secretary general of PODEMOS.

Not only Podemos has been financed by Chavismo according to the document revealed by Okdiario, but Carvajal pointed out that while he was “Director of Intelligence and Military Counterintelligence of Venezuela” he received several reports indicating that international financings by the socialist regime were taking place in Europe, South America and Central America.

Which politicians received blood money from Chavismo?

There are two European movements that were financed by Chavismo. One is, as mentioned, the political party Podemos, which is the one Okdiario emphasizes, and the other is the Italian Five Star Movement (M5S), a Euroskeptic left-wing populist party that is part of the coalition government in Italy.

It is very difficult to define M5S in the ideological spectrum, however, according to a report by Spanish newspaper ABC, the Maduro regime financed the Italian party in 2010, labeling it as an “anti-capitalist and leftist movement in the Italian Republic”. Although the M5S labeled the ABC report as “fake news”, the now-former Chavista intelligence chief Carvajal is once again putting the spotlight on the anti-system party for that controversial briefcase sent by the Venezuelan socialist regime.

The other politicians financed were South and Central Americans. One of the most prominent names in the document is that of Colombian Gustavo Petro, a former Marxist guerrilla who now serves as a senator in that country. Petro, in January 2020, disassociated himself from the links to the Venezuelan regime, saying that he never received economic aid from Chavismo.

Carvajal’s accusation could be a strong political blow against Petro, who is running for the Colombian presidential elections. The leftist senator, in addition, has another extra weight on his shoulders: hie past as guerrilla fighter and also the multiple political failures in other presidential races.

Another politician mentioned by Carvajal is Néstor Kirchner, former Argentinean president who died in 2010 and husband of the current vice-president of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK). His presidency, along with that of his wife, CFK, was marred by a significant legacy of corruption, waste and debt for the South American country.

The third South American politician revealed by Carvajal is Evo Morales, Bolivia’s former socialist dictator, who is linked to drug trafficking and violated his country’s constitutional laws to perpetuate himself in power. Evo was kicked out of office as president after starring in electoral fraud in 2019, had to leave Bolivia for a while and then returned to the country after Luis Arce won the elections in 2020.

Arce, who is from the same party as Morales, the MAS, took advantage of the divisions in the Bolivian opposition to Evo to win the elections. Now in Bolivia, there are several allegations of persecution against political dissidents, including allegations of torture against former president Jeanine Áñez, who took over as interim president.

Lula Da Silva, one of the founders of the Sao Paulo Forum, was another of the presidents who received illicit Chavista financing according to Carvajal. The former Brazilian president was convicted for corruption in his country, but later the Supreme Court overturned the sentences. He is now in the presidential race to contest the elections against the current Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro.

Fernando Lugo is the fifth politician and former president to be denounced by the former head of Chavista intelligence. Lugo, who serves as a senator in Paraguay for the Marxist party Frente Guazú, was removed from the presidential office after a controversial impeachment trial in 2012. His government, as well as the other three, is also tainted by the shadow of corruption, nepotism and waste.

Ollanta Humala in Peru also received money from Chavismo according to the document revealed by OKDIARIO. Humala was president of Peru during the 2011-2016 period and is also under investigation for having received illicit money in the famed Lava Jato case, the largest political corruption scheme in Latin America.

Manuel Zelaya, former president of Honduras, is the only Central American politician mentioned by Carvajal. During his time as president, which ended with a coup d’état, Zelaya became close to the socialist tyrannies of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, turning the Honduran country into a staunch ally of regional leftist movements. In April 2021, Leonel Rivera, former leader of the Los Cachiros cartel, revealed “in a trial in New York that he bribed the current president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, his vice-president Ricardo Álvarez and former president Manuel Zelaya in exchange for protection”, according to Deutsche Welle.
