Pope Francis recently lamented the remarkable drop in birth rates worldwide. The Supreme Pontiff warned that “there is no future without the family”.

Francis affirmed, through his Twitter account, that “if the family is not at the center of the present, there will be no future; but if the family takes off again, everything will take again.”

Pope Francis said in his Friday speech that there is a need for policies aimed at increasing large families: “not based on the search for immediate consensus, but on the growth of the common good in the long term.”

He added that it is urgent to offer young people stable job guarantees and incentives so that they do not have to leave their countries.

Pope Francis also called on the worlds of culture, sports and entertainment to promote and improve the birth rate.

He commented that we must also talk about generational sustainability: “We will not be able to nurture production and preserve the environment if we do not pay attention to families and children. Sustainable growth comes from here. History teaches us this.”

For the Holy Father, the culture of the future cannot be based on the individual and the mere satisfaction of his rights and needs. “What is needed is a culture that cultivates the chemistry of the whole, the beauty of giving, the value of sacrifice,” he added.

On different occasions, Pope Francis has also spoken out against abortion. “No human being can ever be incompatible with life, neither because of his age, nor because of his health, nor because of the quality of his existence,” he said during his participation in an audience of the international pro-life organization Yes to Life!” in line with his speech on the importance of the family.

The pontiff also criticized the “dominant culture of today,” which promotes a hostility towards children with disabilities, leading the baby’s parents to abortion as a practice of “prevention.”

Francis pointed out that the Church’s teaching is clear on the matter: “human life is sacred and inviolable and the use of prenatal diagnosis for selective purposes must be strongly discouraged because it is the expression of an inhuman eugenic mentality, which deprives families of the possibility of welcoming, embracing and loving their weakest children.”
