The Oscar Awards recorded this Sunday the lowest audience in its 93-year history. The Hollywood Reporter said the drop was at least 58%. According to the tally, the 93rd Academy Awards had 9.85 million viewers and a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49. In that sense, it is a sharp drop compared to last year’s 23.64 million viewers.

In addition, this is the second consecutive year in which the TV audience for the awards has suffered a decline. In 2020, the ceremony was watched by 23.6 million viewers, down 20% from 2019, 29.6 million viewers. The previous negative record was held by the 2018 ceremony, watched by 26.5 million viewers.

Nomadland was the winner of the night and was confirmed as the favorite. Also shining with the film were its director, Chinese-born Chloé Zhao, and its leading lady, Frances McDormand. Zhao became only the second woman in 93 editions of the Oscars to win the award for best director.

Anthony Hopkins also stood out with his award for best actor for The Father. Hopkins, who did not participate in the gala, won his second award after The Silence of the Lambs (1991). He thus became, at the age of 83, the oldest actor to be recognized by the Hollywood Academy.

The Father won another award for “Best Adapted Screenplay”, which went to Florian Zeller. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom also did a double with the awards for “Best Costumes” and “Best Makeup”, the latter a category in which the Spaniard Sergio López-Rivera was recognized.

Other films that won double statuettes were Mank with “Best Cinematography” and “Best Production Design”; Soul (Best Animated Film and Best Soundtrack) and Judas and the Black Messiah (Best Song for Fight for You and Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Kaluuya).
