Progressives Don’t Care About Migrants’ Suffering

Migration has become a political banner for progressives. However, the reality is that the left is not interested in the suffering of migrants to reach the countries where they go in search of a better future.

It is not only about using the migration issue for campaigning, it is also necessary to propose a migration plan that allows legal and safe migration. But that is not part of the progressive discourse. There is only talk of open borders, without strategy, and criticism of those who propose a migration control that is not only for the welfare of the citizens of a country, but also for the safety of those who decide to migrate.

Last week, more than 60,000 Mexican migrants who were intercepted in March in the United States were registered. These are 60,000 families who are now suffering because of this situation. Thousands of people take enormous risks in their attempt to reach a country that offers them opportunities to progress. Meanwhile, the discourse of some Democrats, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are based on criticism rather than on the search of solutions.

Ocasio-Cortez has insisted that it is necessary to keep the borders open, when the reality is that this would worsen the border crisis in the United States. This is a situation that has been provoked, among many things, by promises that people would be able to enter easily.

“A lot of people who are just now suddenly horrified at the dehumanizing conditions at our border are the same folks who dehumanize immigrants + helped build these cages in the 1st place,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.

In addition, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris (who said during her election campaign that she would stand up for migrants, but months later, after being appointed to address the immigration crisis) hasn’t even made it a priority to travel to the border point to understand what is happening. Like Ocasio-Cortez, her work has remained, at least for now, a mere speech. In the meantime, people are waiting for a response to save their lives from conditions that, as authorities have warned, include abuse by criminals and child rape.

Republican Party members such as Nikki Haley have denounced Harris’ lack of action. Similarly, Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey said that with the appointment of Kamala Harris, President Biden is not taking the immigration crisis seriously.

The suffering of migrants

Texas Governor Greg Abbott denounced in March that migrants are in shelters that don’t have running water or electricity. In April, Abbott indicated that his administration has received complaints that include allegations of sexual assault, staff shortages, and that children in the facility are not eating throughout the day.

He also noted that, in his view, the Biden-Kamala Harris administration was not prepared for an open borders policy.

It is not a question of prohibiting the entry of migrants because the reality is that most of the people who decide to emigrate do so out of necessity and to flee from countries with socialist governments such as Cuba, Nicaragua or Venezuela. However, it is necessary to establish an orderly migration that allows people to move in a safe way, without having to go through hardships.

But progressives are not interested in that, they only rely on empty discourse. This is something that is not only happening in the United States, but also in other countries. The socialist regime in Venezuela is not interested in the fact that more than 5,000,000 million Venezuelans, according to the United Nations, are scattered around the world trying to save their lives after the debacle in their own countries.

Nor do they care that more than 5,000 people, according to a count by the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, have become refugees in Colombia and are living in deplorable conditions. They do not care. Just as the Cuban regime did not care about expelling its population, who risk their lives to survive.

It is no coincidence that progressives/socialists act the same anywhere in the world. They use migration to win votes, but in reality they do not care about what those who decide to take this difficult path suffer.

Therefore, an orderly migration in which citizens enter the country legally must be promoted. We cannot continue with a discourse in which they are offered entry without guarantees; on the contrary, by encouraging migrants to arrive with their papers in order and start the migratory process immediately, it allows their rights to be respected and makes it easier for the authorities to deal with any irregularity or complaint.

How can this be achieved?

To achieve this, we must work on an immigration plan based on three fundamental axes: institutions, strategy with other countries, and streamlining the immigration process. In the past, the United States has already worked on strengthening its immigration institutions and should continue to do so. It is a matter of increasing the presence of border authorities and improving their capabilities to achieve successful immigration control.

Likewise, work must be done to improve the infrastructure at these migratory points. This will also contribute to the reduction of crime and corruption at border crossings. Security must be a priority. In other words, it is unfeasible to reduce the budget for security forces or to abolish ICE as some progressives have requested.

Finally, it is essential to evaluate political strategies to improve living conditions in the continent and maintain the commitment to promote democratic governments that don’t force their citizens to abandon their countries.
