The Puerto Rico Department of the Family announced on Thursday that it would distribute $3.4 million in financial assistance for the purchase of school supplies for families in Category C of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

Through this benefit of 500 per child, families will be able to purchase school supplies, uniforms, and school supplies for the new school year without sales and use tax (SUT) during the sales on Friday and Saturday.

This plan of the Department of the Family will be aimed at assisting those families that are members of the TANF program in its category C until June 2021, that is, available for families with children from zero (0) months to eighteen (18) years old where there is a factor of abandonment of one or both parents; or a family with both parents where one of the parents has a total and permanent disability.

Alberto Fradera Vázquez, of the Family Socioeconomic Development Administration (ADSEF), explained that “6,792 minors between the ages of three years and 17 years benefit from the economic assistance (of the Department of the Family), which represents a direct impact to 4,161 families.”

“The benefits are granted automatically through the Tarjeta Única and are reflected in the accounts as of midnight tonight. Sales without SUT are scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, July 16, and Saturday, July 17. We will continue to support families in their recovery and in the transition to face-to-face education.”
