Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said Thursday that Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), should receive a five-year prison sentence for “lying to Congress.”

“We’ve referred him to the Department of Justice,” Paul told Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business Network, but he believes that Attorney General Merrick Garland would not “objectively look” at the investigation against Fauci.

“But Fauci should go to prison for five years for lying to Congress,” Senator Paul continued. “They’ve prosecuted other people, they’ve selectively gone after Republicans, but in no way will they do anything about him lying.”

Paul believes that Fauci should “at the very least” be removed from his position as NIH director as he “cost people lives through misinformation.”

Rand Paul insists on questioning Fauci

Rand Paul’s assertion refers to testimony Fauci gave before Congress months ago, when he said in a heated discussion that NIH did not fund “gain-of-function” research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

At the time, the Republican senator reminded Fauci about the consequences of lying to Congress while berating him. “Dr. Fauci, as you are aware, it is a crime to lie to Congress. Section 1001 of the US criminal code creates a felony and a five-year penalty for lying to Congress,” Paul said at the time. In addition, he also rebuked him on the reopening of schools, natural immunity after COVID-19 and the theory that the virus had escaped from the Wuhan lab.
