President Joe Biden is facing a crisis in his leadership according to a poll showing that a majority of voters believe the United States is on the wrong track. 61 % of those polled by Morning Consult / POLITICO believe that bad decisions have been made.

In that regard, 47% of voters disapprove of Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan crisis while only 12% said they strongly approve of Biden. Similarly, the poll found that 72% do not believe the troop withdrawal was being done well.

The poll was conducted Saturday, before the official ending of more than 20 years of the U.S. mission on Afghan soil, and included 1,997 voters, with a margin of error of 2%.

Biden has been experiencing a drop in his approval as president. A week ago, poll compiler FiveThirtyEight detailed that the president is experiencing his lowest approval numbers since taking office in January of this year, with 45% of Americans disapproving of his job performance versus 48.9% who approve.

The negative effect of the Afghan withdrawal on Biden’s numbers can also be seen in individual polls. An Ipsos poll conducted Aug. 13-15 had Biden at 53 % approval.

The same pollster did a poll between August 18 and 19 and Biden’s approval had dropped from 53% to 46% while his disapproval had dropped to 49 %. In addition, his approval also dropped from a 54%-46% margin in a Morning Consult poll between August 13 and 16 to a 50%-47% difference between August 16 and 19.

In addition, the numbers are expected to continue to fall, because although the U.S. presence in Afghanistan formally ended on Tuesday, there are still Americans stranded in Afghanistan, something that has generated criticism of the Biden administration.

For example, yesterday the Republicans tried to pass a bill that would oblige Biden to present a plan for the return of American citizens in that country, but the measure was blocked by the Democrats.

Despite this, Kevin McCarthy, House Republican Minority Leader, assured that Republicans will continue to insist until all Americans return safely to their homes.

“Republicans will not stop until all Americans are safe at home,” McCarthy said.
