The Miami Book Fair, which last year was closed due to the pandemic and was held virtually, returns next November with some authors in person, such as the Colombian Pilar Quintana, winner of the 2021 Alfaguara Novel Prize, while others, such as the Mexican Elena Poniatowska, will intervene remotely.
The festival celebrates its return “in person”, although it maintains some events “on demand”, a modality introduced in the 2020 edition for which it is necessary to register.
The good thing about this modality is that the “on line” events are recorded and can be viewed again, says the program.
The fair begins on Nov. 6 with a “children’s book picnic” in the city of Doral, near Miami, and closes on Nov. 21 with “A Coffee with Elena Poniatowska,” an on-demand event included in this year’s Ibero-American Authors Program.
The celebrated journalist and 2013 Cervantes Prize winner will talk about her work with storyteller, poet and cultural promoter Arturo Morell.
During these days, according to the program, several “cafés” have been planned with renowned authors, such as the Brazilian writer, poet and journalist Nélida Piñón, who will talk about her literary career and her book “Una furtiva lágrima” (A Sneaky Tear).
Also participating in this series of dialogues will be the renowned Uruguayan-Spanish writer Carmen Posadas, who will talk about her new historical novel “La Peregrina”. Both meetings will be virtual, according to the program.
In-person events
The Colombian narrator and screenwriter Pilar Quintana will be present in person to present “Los abismos”, a story starring a child who takes on the revelations of her mother and the silences of her father to begin to build her own world.
There will also be “un café con Don Francisco”, by Chilean Mario Kreutzberger, creator and host of the program “Sábado gigante” since 1962.
The Mexican-American writer Sandra Cisneros is one of the authors who will be present, according to the organizers of the event, which is promoted by Miami Dade College.
Cisneros presents the novel “Martita, I Remember You / Martita, te recuerdo”, in conversation with the American poet Jan Beatty.
Also, but virtually, in the section “Of Prisons and Dreams of Freedom”, among many other titles, the book “Armando Sosa Fortuny: Martyr of Freedom” is presented, about the Cuban anti-Castro fighter who was imprisoned for 43 years and died in prison.
This volume is signed by journalists and activists Pedro Corzo, Wenceslao Cruz and Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat.
As every year, the general program of the fair presents several panels, grouped this time under the title “Literature and arts: creative symbiosis” and with approaches to theater, plastic arts and cinema.
In one of them, the Internet radio station Radio Gladys Palmera, which broadcasts music from Barcelona and has the largest collection of Afro-Cuban music in the world, is coming to the fair this year.
Founded by Spaniard Alejandra Fierro, the station is presenting its first book, “Cha Cha Chá, un baile y una época”, which brings together, in 416 pages, more than 800 covers, posters and full-color photographs of the golden age of Latin music in the mid-20th century.
