A group of House Republicans on Monday called on the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate allegations that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acted on behalf of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) in refusing to reopen schools.

The letter was published exclusively by the Daily Caller. The document is spearheaded by Virginia Representative Bob Good and is signed by 25 other Republicans. The signatories demand that the Office of Inspector General investigate communication between the CDC and the AFT regarding the February decision on school reopenings.

“We request that you investigate immediately allegations of collusion and political influence in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s correspondence between the CDC and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT),” the letter states.

Reopening schools is safe

Similarly, Republicans argued that reopening schools is safe and that attending schools contributes little to community transmission. “Many had anticipated in February that CDC would recommend in-school instruction nationwide because studies, including one published by CDC researchers, indicate that school attendance contributes little to community transmission and students are largely safe with in-person instruction.”

According to the CDC’s official website, evidence suggests that many K-12 schools that have implemented prevention strategies have been able to safely resume face-to-face classes and keep institutions open.
