A group of at least 120 former Republican officials are reportedly in talks to form a third party, according to Blaze News.
As cited by the media outlet, a Reuters report notes that the former officials “believe the party is unwilling to stand up to former President Donald Trump.”
As such, the unnamed officials are allegedly in talks to form a “center-right separatist party” it noted citing four people involved in such discussions.
“The early-stage discussions include former elected Republicans, former officials from the Republican Administrations of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Trump, former Republican Ambassadors and Republican strategists,” the media outlet reported.
The plan would be to field “candidates in some races, but also back center-right candidates in others, whether Republicans, Independents or Democrats.”
According to Reuters, those said to be included in the call are John Mitnick, General Counsel for the Department of Homeland Security under Trump; former Republican congressman Charlie Dent; Elizabeth Neumann, Deputy Chief of Staff for Trump’s Department of Homeland Security; and Miles Taylor, another former Trump Homeland Security official.
Evan McMullin, a former chief policy director for the House Republican Conference who ran as an independent candidate in the 2016 presidential election, told the outlet he co-hosted the Zoom call.
“Large portions of the Republican Party are becoming radicalized and threatening American democracy,” McMullin said. “The party must recommit to truth, reason and founding ideals, or there clearly must be something new.”
The position taken by this Republican group could give the Democratic Party greater control of the federal administration and state governments. For the time being there have been no official reactions from the Republican Party.
