Following the discovery that FBI agents allegedly tried to bury investigations related to Hunter Biden, at least 33 Republican senators are demanding a thorough investigation into President Biden’s son, who may have boosted business dealings abroad through his ties to his father when he was Barack Obama’s VP.
The senators addressed a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel and to give him appropriate protection and authority to conduct the investigation into Hunter Biden.
The senators allege politicization at the DOJ and a lack of public confidence in law enforcement following recent revelations about the withholding of information that would incriminate Hunter Biden.
“There is no way of knowing the entire scope of the investigation, but evidence seems to be mounting that Hunter Biden committed numerous federal crimes, including, but not limited to, tax fraud, money laundering, and foreign-lobbying violations,” states the letter from the 33 senators.
Republicans denounce “threat to national security”
Republicans on the House Oversight Committee claim that the Hunter Biden scandal may become a national security threat.
Rep. James Comer (R-KY) of the House Oversight Committee said that since Biden took office, the U.S. Treasury Department changed its policy for releasing Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) to Congress under the Bank Secrecy Act.
That move comes as media reports indicate that at least 150 SARs related to Hunter Biden have been filed.
“We’ve repeatedly called on Biden’s Treasury Department to provide answers, but they are stonewalling congressional oversight,” Comer noted.
The Kentucky Republican representative argued that the problem is a threat to national security.
“President Biden’s family peddles access to the highest levels of government to enrich themselves, often at the expense of U.S. interests. We need to know if President Biden has received a cut from these shady foreign business deals,” said Comer.
“If President Biden or his immediate family has, that is a national security threat and he may be compromised,” he concluded.
