Republican congressmen visited the U.S.-Mexico border on Monday to learn about the impact of the increase of migrants entering the country illegally, especially unaccompanied minors.

The delegation, led by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), traveled to El Paso, a border city in Texas, denounced the immigrant policies of the Biden administration.

“It’s more than a crisis, this is a human heartbreak,” commented McCarthy in a press conference, who blamed the Democratic administration for the increase of unlawful migrants on the border with Mexico.

“The crisis is created by the presidential policies of this new administration,” McCarthy said, after visiting the Border Patrol Processing Center in El Paso and taking a private tour with his congressional colleagues along the border between the El Paso (Texas) area and Sunland Park (New Mexico).

In less than two months of the Biden administration, both Democrats and Republicans have made their positions on immigration clear. Republicans see the border crisis and the 2022 midterm elections as an opportunity to regain control of the U.S. Congress.

The conference, which was attended by a dozen Republican congressmen, was held a few meters from the “private wall” where the state of Texas meets New Mexico and on the south side the border with Mexico.

U.S. Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-NM) was present at the conference and was one of those in charge of guiding her colleagues who seek to pressure Congress to act to find a solution to the growing arrival of illegal immigrants at the border.

According to figures provided last week by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), migrant arrests at the border with Mexico totaled 100,441 last February, the highest number for this month since at least 2012 and representing a 28% increase over last January (78,323).

That month, the increase in the arrival of migrant families was 139.9% compared to the previous month and 61.4% in the case of minors unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
