Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart reported Thursday that members of the Democratic Party voted against a resolution condemning the Cuban regime’s oppression of its citizens. Diaz-Balart published the names of the legislators who did not approve the document.
Prominent among those who voted against it were: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Nydia Velasquez, and Michael F. Doyle.
“These Members voted against a bipartisan resolution condemning the #Cuban tyranny’s oppression & vowing solidarity with the brave Cuban people demanding freedom. This is a matter of basic human rights & democracy,” Diaz-Balart wrote on Twitter.
Journalist Alex Daugherty explained that the resolution condemns the repression on the island and defends Cubans’ desire for freedom. In addition, the document demands the release of all political prisoners in Cuba.
“Expressing solidarity with Cuban citizens demonstrating peacefully for fundamental freedoms, condemning the Cuban regime’s acts of repression, and calling for the immediate release of arbitrarily detained Cuban citizens,” the document said.
He also indicated that the measure was introduced by both parties led by Democrats Debbie Wasserman and Albio Sires; along with Republican Mario Diaz-Balart.
Diaz-Balart’s condemnations of the Cuban regime
This is not the first time Diaz-Balart has pushed for condemnation of the Cuban regime. In July, during the protests on the island, the congressman introduced a resolution in defense of Cuban citizens and in support of the demonstrations.
“For 62 years, the Cuban people have struggled for freedom and human rights under a brutal, repressive dictatorship. On this day, which also coincides with the anniversary of the Tugboat Massacre, we also remember the regime’s decades of malevolence, including the Brothers to the Rescue Shoot-Down, the firing squads, torture, arbitrary arrests, killings, human trafficking, those who fled in makeshift rafts through shark-infested waters, and the many activists who have suffered,” Diaz-Balart said in a statement.
Finally, he maintained that Cuban citizens will be free. “The Cuban people will be free, and they will remember those who stood with them. I thank so many of my colleagues for standing with them by supporting this important resolution.”
