On Thursday, FL Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 5, the Fetal and Infant Mortality Reduction Act, which bans all abortions after 15 weeks gestation.

“House Bill 5 protects babies in the womb who have beating hearts, who can move, taste, see and feel pain,” said Governor DeSantis.

He further added, “Life is a sacred gift worthy of our protection, and I am proud to sign this great legislation that represents the most significant protection for life in the state’s modern history.”

Other Ron DeSantis Pro-Life Measures

The Governor’s Office compared HB 5 to measures other states have pushed on the issue. “While other states, such as California and Colorado, are taking extreme anti-life measures by passing laws that deny babies in the womb any rights or protection, and provide for unrestricted abortions on demand until the moment of birth, Florida continues to move in a pro-life direction,” the office highlighted.

The governor’s team recalled that in June 2020, DeSantis signed SB 404, legislation that requires the written consent of a minor’s parent or legal guardian for an abortion. Last year, he also signed SB 2518, which helps reduce maternal mortality rates and improve health outcomes for new mothers and children by extending postpartum Medicaid eligibility from 60 days to 12 months after delivery.

“And after seven years of legal challenges by pro-abortion activists and activist judges, Florida’s 24-hour waiting period was upheld and reinstated by a circuit court judge earlier this week,” the office highlighted.
