Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis opened the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2022 in Orlando on Thursday, welcoming the “freest state in America” that was able to “defeat Faucism” and where “freedom has prevailed” during two years of mandates and restrictions.

DeSantis noted that his administration “set an all-time record number for domestic tourism” in 2021, including many “lockdown politicians” who pushed strict measures “against their own people” only to visit Florida “escaping to freedom” after criticizing his ways of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We refused to let this state descend into some type of Faucian dystopia where people’s freedoms are curtailed and their livelihoods are destroyed,” DeSantis told the nation’s largest conservative conference.

“We protected people’s rights. We protected people’s jobs. We protected small businesses. And we made sure that every kid in the state of Florida had an opportunity to go to school in-person, five days a week,” the Republican continued.

The governor insisted that his administration “refused” to turn Florida into a state at the service of technological and scientific elites, and declared that, were it not for the leadership of his policies, “this country could look like Canada or Australia,” citing them as examples of nations “of authoritarian rule.”

“Florida has defeated Faucism. Freedom has prevailed in the sunshine state,” DeSantis said.

Economy, CRT and Florida Law Enforcement

DeSantis took space in his speech to criticize the president’s attitude against Florida’s actions in the face of the pandemic. “I can tell you there’s one fellow that just hates Florida: his name is Joe Biden,” the governor said. “He doesn’t like Florida. He doesn’t like me because we stand up to him.”

Last year he invoked a special session to protect every job in Florida from Biden’s vaccination mandates, and he succeeded. “We’ve sent people to the Texas border and are suing Biden over his ‘catch-and-release policy,'” DeSantis said.

He immediately continued against the Biden administration’s reckless fiscal policy, and blamed it for “Bidenflation”: “the inflation is because of his policies and we’re not going to let anyone forget that.”

In comparison, DeSantis pointed out that Florida is “leading” in economy: “we have the largest budget surplus and thelowest per-capita tax burden in the country.” He further noted that Florida “has no income tax,” and won’t as long as he is governor.

DeSantis’ speech served as a reminder of his legislation against defunding law enforcement and “the strongest anti-riot legislation” in the country.

“If you riot in the state of Florida, if you loot, if you are engaged in mob violence, this is not gonna be like Portland where they arrest you, take your mugshot, slap you on the wrist and put you right back on the street. In Florida, you’re not getting a slap on the wrist. You’re getting the inside of a jail cel.”

It also served to defend his stances against Critical Race Theory (CRT), the teaching of which in public education in his state was banned by decree.

“We won’t allow Florida tax dollars to be spent teaching kids to hate our country or to hate each other, DeSantis banned CRT in K-12 education and now he states his state has the strongest civics education in the country.

The Florida governor further mentioned that it has been all of these policies that have promoted the highest rates of internal immigration from all parts of the country, and said that has also translated into there being “more Republicans registered to vote” than Democrats across the Sunshine State today.
