“Kids do not need to be wearing these masks in schools. We need to be able to let them be kids and let them act normally,” said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday.

The discussion on whether children should wear masks is due to scientific evidence detailing that children have a higher immunity to COVID-19 than adults. According to guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in May indicated that fewer children were infected with the disease during the pandemic than adults.

A study also conducted by the CDC in Rhode Island in July 2020 revealed that the opening of daycare centers did not cause the spread of the coronavirus.

For its part, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the use of masks in children from the age of 12. And in the case of children under that age, the organization recommends first checking the conditions in which the child will be. For example, if there is widespread transmission in the area where the child resides and consider whether he or she can safely and appropriately use the mask.

“WHO and UNICEF recommend that children aged 12 years and older wear a mask under the same conditions as adults. In particular when a minimum distance of one meter from others cannot be guaranteed and there is widespread transmission in the area,” WHO notes.
