Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Tuesday blasted President Joe Biden for ordering the mass deportation of Haitian immigrants held at the border with Mexico and called for an end to “hate and xenophobia” policies.
“I urge President Biden… to immediately put a stop to these expulsions, and to end this Title 42 policy at our southern border,” Schumer said during a speech on the Senate floor.
The senator was referring to the pandemic policy known as Title 42, under which the United States automatically deports most undocumented immigrants who arrive at its southern border without giving them the opportunity to apply for asylum.
Schumer, of the same party as President Biden, said he has information that there are four flights scheduled to deport these migrants and complained that they will be sent “to a country that cannot receive them.”
“Such a decision defies common sense. It also defies common decency and what America is all about,” he said.
Haiti, considered the poorest country in the American Continent, is facing a deep political and social crisis that has been aggravated in recent months by the earthquake of last August 15, which caused more than 2,200 deaths and heavy material losses, and the assassination on July 7 of the president of that nation, Jovenel Moïse.
On Monday, 233 Haitians, including 45 children and 45 women, arrived in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, deported from the United States, which has already sent 560 migrants back to the Caribbean country.
The Biden administration opted for mass expulsions after more than 13,000 migrants, mostly Haitians, arrived in the town of Del Rio (Texas) in the last few days, after crossing the Rio Grande, which marks the border between Mexico and the United States.
