HBO began on Monday the production phase of House of the Dragon, the first sequel series to Game of Thrones whose premiere is scheduled for 2022 and will kick off a saga of spin-off shows.

The series shared a photo of the first script on its Twitter profile on Monday, featuring its future stars, Paddy Considine, Olicia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith and Stebe Toussaint, among others.

House of the Dragon is inspired by the book Fire & Blood (2018), whose narrative is set some 300 years before the events narrated in the Game of Thrones series, and delves into the history of the Targaryens, one of the most important houses of this epic fantasy universe.

The House of the Dragon: the first sequel of Game of Thrones

In October 2019, it was made known that this would be the first series derived from the phenomenon hit show Game of Thrones (2011-2019), which caused a worldwide sensation and holds the record for the most awarded Emmy fiction production (59 awards in total).

At the same time that House of the Dragon was given the green light, plans were interrupted for another Game of Thrones spin-off series that was to star Naomi Watts and which did not convince network officials after filming its first episode (known in the industry as a pilot).

On the other hand, in January it was learned that HBO was beginning to shape a new prequel that would revolve around the short novels “The Tales of Dunk and Egg” by George R.R. Martin.

And there are three other ideas in development: 9 Voyages, a show about Corlys Velaryon’s sea voyages; Flea Bottom, about King’s Landing’s poorest neighborhood; and 10,000 Ships, revolving around Princess Nymeria.

These projects, as well as a hypothetical animated series, are at a very early stage and may not all see the light of day.
