Democratic Senator Joe Manchin President Joe Biden on Tuesday to reconsider the order revoking the president’s permit for the Keystone XL pipeline.

According to The Associated Press, Manchin said in a letter to Biden that the Keystone XL and other pipelines “remain the safest way to transport our oil and natural gas resources, and support thousands of good-paying American union jobs.”

Machin leads a committee that is crucial to Biden’s efforts to address climate change, but has expressed skepticism about some of the actions advocates say are needed to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

His letter came at the same time that 14 Republican attorneys general sent a missive telling Biden that his decision to reject Keystone XL “will result in devastating harm to many of our states and local communities. Even those states outside the path of the Keystone XL pipeline – indeed, all Americans – will suffer severe and harmful consequences.”

The letter was drafted by Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen and signed by 13 other state attorneys general, including Ken Paxton of Texas and Patrick Morrissey of West Virginia, who lost the 2018 Senate race to Manchin.

Within hours of becoming president, Biden signed more than a dozen executive orders, including canceling the Keystone XL pipeline.

The 2,735-kilometer pipeline was planned to carry about 800,000 barrels of oil per day, has been plagued by controversy from the beginning.

In 2015, the Obama administration banned construction of the pipeline. But with Trump’s arrival in the White House in 2017, the project was approved. Now it is once again adrift.
