The Senate confirmed on Thursday the current Attorney General of California, Xavier Becerra, as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Becerra became the first Latino to assume this position in the history of the country.
The Upper House confirmed Becerra, of Mexican roots, with 50 votes in favor and 49 against.
As the new Health Secretary, Becerra will be responsible for leading the federal government’s response to the coronavirus and will also be responsible for dealing with the growing number of migrant minors who have arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in recent weeks.
