Republican senators Joni Ernst, Marsha Blackburn, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and Jim Inhofe are proposing a series of bills in response to the unprecedented immigration crisis at the southern border of the United States.

The four initiatives focus on punishing crimes committed by illegal immigrants and suspected smugglers at the border. The proposals also include a demand that the federal government admits that there is a serious immigration crisis at the southern border.

Four separate bills

Sen. Joni Ernst, (R-IA) vice chair of the Senate Republican Party, told Fox News that she and a group of fellow senators will introduce “Sarah’s Law,” a bill that would require Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to take into custody suspected criminals in illegal status.

The legislative proposal is named after Sarah Root, who was killed by an illegal immigrant who was not detained by ICE and “never faced justice.”

For her part, Sen. Blackburn (R-TN), will introduce a bill that would require the Department of Homeland Security to implement DNA testing of all migrants traveling with minors who are detained. This in order to verify whether the children are actually relatives of those accompanying them.

“Drug cartels and gangs are using children to falsely present themselves as family members and seek asylum at our southern border. These unaccompanied minors are especially vulnerable to human trafficking and are often coerced into sexual acts,” Blackburn told Fox News.

In addition to Blackburn, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) will also propose another bill named “Kate,” which would impose a minimum sentence of five years on any illegal immigrant who has committed crimes and also entered the country after being deported.

The initiative refers to Kate Steinle, who was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant who had several felony convictions and had been deported.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) will introduce the bill “to stop border surges,” which aims to tighten the asylum process.

Lastly, Jim Inhofe (R-OK) will propose a resolution supported by 16 Republican senators urging Democrats to admit that what happened at the border is a migration “crisis.”

It should be remembered that as the migratory crisis at the border grows, so does the concern of the authorities that the flow of migrants could allow criminals to enter the United States.

Recently, the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, denounced that the Democratic administration is not only “inviting more illegal immigration,” but is also empowering drug traffickers.

He reported that of the 110,000 people detained as of the end of February, 800 were criminal aliens who had been previously arrested and deported from the United States, 78 were sex offenders and 62 were members of dangerous gangs.
