In the most recent episode of Sinceramente, our editors-in-chief, Vanessa Vallejo and Orlando Avendaño, talked to Venezuelan-American political theorist and diplomat, Vanessa Neumann, regarding Alex Saab’s criminal relationship with the socialist regime of Nicolás Maduro, and the implications of his collaboration with the American justice system.
Saab, who is accused of being a frontman for the Chavista tyranny and was extradited to the United States from Cape Verde last October, was until then a key player in the criminal operations led from the government palace in Caracas.
Why is Alex Saab important for the United States?
Referring to Saab as a “hyper-connector” and calling the Maduro regime as a “transnational criminal organization,” Neumann says that the Colombian criminal was more than a corrupt or alleged middleman in illegal operations.
“There are not many people in the world who can connect so many people, from so many different countries,” says Neumann, so Alex Saab, she says, was a hub connecting Maduro’s criminal operations in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
He might also know the secret dealings in each of the Venezuelan tyranny’s criminal links. In the hands of American justice, he becomes Maduro’s greatest weakness.
Neumann stresses that Alex Saab, knowing all he knows about the crimes of the Venezuelan regime, is of interest to U.S. authorities precisely because he has a degree of intelligence and capacity that others do not have to provide information on the highest criminal elites.
Saab reportedly connected Maduro to the Quds Forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps unit specializing in unconventional warfare and military intelligence operations, as well as to Vladimir Putin, Erdoğan and, presumably, the Castro tyranny in Cuba.
