The arrival of illegal migrants at the southern border is on the rise, and with it, the tragic events that threaten the lives and safety of Americans in the region.

On New Year’s Eve, the TX Department of Public Safety arrested a member of the Mexican mafia who was smuggling 21 illegal immigrants. The truck was stolen and the suspect had a gun, Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported.

On October 30, 2021, while on her way to her favorite restaurant to celebrate her birthday, Wanda Sitoski was killed in a car accident after a 16-year-old carrying four illegal aliens in his car ran a red light at 105 miles per hour and killed her instantly.

Sitoski’s case is a reminder of the serious consequences of a border crisis that continues unabated and is claiming new victims every day.

“Illegal migrants coming through the county are not seeking asylum, but are doing everything they can to avoid law enforcement,” Sheriff Mark Dannels told The Epoch Times.

Border Patrol apprehensions in the Tucson area, which includes Cochise County, nearly tripled. In FY 2021, border agents apprehended more than 190,000 illegal aliens in the sector, up from 66,000 the previous year; while thousands more evaded apprehension.

There are those who arrive in the United States and turn themselves into the authorities to comply with the protocol established by the immigration system; and there are those who prefer to break the law, avoid detention and remain in the country as illegal aliens.

Dannels reported that his office tracks between 900 and 1,000 smuggling vehicles in that sector. He explained that these drivers are paid around $1,000 for each illegal alien they smuggle. They help them get to Phoenix so they can then travel to other cities. “They set up in public places along the highways waiting to be called to come pick them up,” Dannels said.

“The federal government is doing nothing. It’s willful negligence. So we are seeing people commit crimes in our communities every day […] If we don’t apply some kind of coercive measure, nothing happens,” he said.

Arizona has no law against illegal migrant smuggling

In 2010, the state legislature passed SB 1070 which included a section making it illegal to transport, conceal or harbor an illegal alien. In 2012, the Supreme Court ruled that Arizona could not create state immigration offenses.

“It’s up to U.S. Attorneys to prosecute at the federal level, but they’re not taking most of the cases, especially those involving juvenile drivers,” Cochise County Prosecutor Brian McIntyre told The Epoch Times.

“What seems to be a policy right now is that [if you have] five or less foreigners in your vehicle, prosecution will not be accepted (…) If you get caught with five or less, you most likely won’t get stopped (…) And [you go] back tomorrow to do the same thing,” he said.

In the first 11 months of 2021, McIntyre’s office received 58 felony absconding cases related to human smuggling, just over one case per week.

ICE has not published its annual report yet

While the Democratic administration remains silent on the border crisis, for the first time in a decade Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is not releasing its annual report for 2021.

Meanwhile, according to Fox News, the Border Patrol has arrested several sex offenders at the border in recent weeks, including an Ecuadorian national with prior convictions for aggravated sodomy, child molestation and rape.
