Thousands of voters in South Florida cities went to the polls Tuesday without incident to elect mayors and commissioners, including Cuban-born Republican Francis Suarez, who was re-elected mayor of Miami.

Suarez, elected mayor of the Floridian city in 2017, achieved a second term with 20,816 votes counted, 79 %, according to preliminary figures released by Florida Politics.

On Twitter, Suarez reproduced Florida Politics’s announcement: “Miami Mayor @FrancisSuarez overwhelmingly wins re-election.”

Suarez, who previously served two terms as commissioner and is the son of former Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez, managed to get many technology firms to settle in Miami during his tenure.

In Miami-Dade, some 50,000 people have already voted in this electoral process through early voting or by mail, according to the county’s Department of Elections, although early voting has dropped this year.

Another city in this district that elected a new mayor is Hialeah, which has a Cuban majority and where five candidates ran to replace the outgoing Carlos Hernández.

The winner was Republican Esteban Bovo, with 12,837 votes in his favor (59 %).

In the tourist area f Miami Beach, Democratic Mayor Dan Gelber also won re-election with 7,742 votes (62%).

At the federal level, voters in Florida’s 20th congressional district (which includes parts of the southern counties of Broward and Palm Beach) determined the candidates of both parties who will run on January 11 to choose who will replace Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings, who died last April.

The winning candidates were Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (Democratic Party), with 10,913 votes, and Jason Mariner (Republican Party), with 3,344.

According to local media, many registered voters did not go to the polls, perhaps due to a rainy day in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
