Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said Monday that search crews have recovered three more bodies from the rubble of the collapsed building in Surfside, bringing the official death toll to 27.

After the bodies recovered today, the provisional number of people missing from the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South building stood at 118, according to the latest official count.

Rescue crews resumed their search of the damaged residential building at midnight on Sunday, shortly after the part of the building that had been left standing after the June 24 collapse was demolished for safety reasons.

The expected arrival of a tropical storm in South Florida forced Miami-Dade authorities to take the decision to demolish the unstable 12-story structure to prevent winds and rain from collapsing it and causing more damage.
