Darrell Brooks is the man identified as the alleged driver of the red SUV that plowed into dozens of people at the Waukesha, WI Christmas parade. The tragedy left 5 adults dead and 48 injured.
According to preliminary official reports, Brooks was fleeing a domestic disturbance being attended by police when he crashed into the crowd after passing through security barriers. The driver’s ramming also injured two children who are in critical condition. The van was found parked a few blocks away from the incident.
According to the British newspaper The Daily Mail, Brooks is an amateur rapper with a long criminal record who a few days ago was released from jail on bail after posting $1,000. His criminal record dates back to 1999 for charges including possession of drugs, strangulation and suffocation, battery, and resisting arrest.
The Waukesha Police Department, for the time being, arrested Darrell Brooks on five counts of murder. A police spokesperson said this was not a terrorist act.
According to the Daily Mail, the rapper, between July 2020 and February 2021, “was in custody awaiting a trial date on a $7,500 bond for shooting at his nephew after a fight over his old cell phone.”
However, the bail “was dropped to $500 in February because the courts couldn’t give him a trial quickly enough.”
The Daily Mail said that Brooks’ last arrest was due to “hunting down the mother of one of his children at a hotel, then following her in the street with his SUV and running her over in the parking lot of a gas station after she refused to get in his car.”
The now alleged murder was arrested at the time on a total of five charges, including evading bail, breaching the conditions of one of his many other bail bonds, and violating probation.

Amid harsh criticism of Wisconsin’s criminal justice system, the Waukesha District Attorney released a statement noting that suspect Darrell Brooks should not have been released on such a low cash bail earlier this month. They are now under an internal investigation.
