The death toll from Sunday’s hit-and-run at a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, rose to six dead and 62 injured, authorities announced Tuesday.
The figures increased after the death on Monday of a child who had suffered injuries.
This was announced by Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper during the first appearance of the suspect in the incident, Darrell Brooks, who appeared in court in the Milwaukee suburb.
Brooks was arrested last Sunday shortly after he drove a red SUV into a crowd gathered for a Christmas parade in Waukesha.
The motives for the incident are still unclear. The authorities only detailed that the detainee had been involved prior to the hit-and-run in a “domestic disturbance” from which he fled.
The Prosecutor’s Office charged Brooks on Tuesday with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide, and said it will soon add one more, after the death of the minor, a crime that is punishable in Wisconsin with life imprisonment.
During the hearing, court commissioner Kevin Costello, an assistant judge, set bail at $5 million, which he described as “extraordinarily high, although it is an extraordinary case.”
It was released on Tuesday that Brooks was out on bail after he hit a woman with his car earlier this month.
According to court records, he was jailed and released after posting $1,000 bail after running over a woman he claimed was the mother of his child at a gas station on the 2nd of last month.
The Milwaukee County district attorney’s office Tuesday in a statement lamented that he was granted bail in the woman’s hit-and-run case and called it “inappropriate.”
Brooks has been in and out of jail for the past 20 years and has criminal records in Wisconsin, Nevada and Georgia. He also appears on criminal records in Nevada as a sex offender, where in November 2006 he pleaded guilty to having sex with a minor under the state’s age of consent, which is 16.
