Seven Republicans voted for the conviction of a president who remains popular in the party, putting themselves in the line of fire of the GOP civil war
Such is the idea that the Democrats want to impose Trump's impeachment: that the former President and a good part of the Republicans are endangering the republic.
According to The Associated Press, in a letter, the lawyers accused House Democrats of exploiting the trauma of the riots in the U.S. Capitol for their party's benefit.
“A conviction would also not bring the closure as many may hope. Such disqualification would be one of the few impeachment issues that could be challenged in court and he could well win. He would then be more popular than ever with many citizens”
Donald Trump has criticized the retrial against him as "absolutely ridiculous" and "a continuation of the biggest witch-hunt in the history of politics"
The House will begin debating the parameters of the impeachment, then take two procedural votes; and only later there will be two hours of actual debate
The party plans to move forward with impeachment despite Trump having less than two weeks left in the White House.
"If the president does not leave office imminently and voluntarily, Congress will proceed with our action," Pelosi said in a letter to House Democrats, pushing for an impeachment as early as Monday.
