Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) rebuked the Biden administration for its formal decision to remove the Colombian criminal group FARC from the list of terrorist organizations of the State Department

In a fiery congressional hearing, Cruz said to Brian A. Nichols, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, that the FARC is an “organization of Marxists, Leninists, narco-terrorists who for decades have killed, kidnapped and extorted Colombians.”

“They [FARC] continue to pose an acute threat to Colombian security and to American interests across the region,” Cruz said. “This is sadly a part of a pattern of Biden’s foreign policy when it comes to dealing with terrorists, and it is a pattern of appeasement and weakness toward terrorists.”

The U.S. senator gave as an example the failure of Biden’s foreign policy in Afghanistan and Yemen. “Given that appeasement did not work with the Houthis in Yemen, since it did not work with the Taliban in Afghanistan, why does the administration believe that the weakness and appeasement and exclusion of the FARC as terrorists will produce anything but terrible results in Colombia?” Cruz asked Nichols.

Nichols responded that Biden’s decision excludes the Second Marquetalia and the FARC dissidents, which were designated as terrorist organizations. He also clarified that the decision was motivated as a sign of support for the peace agreement signed in 2016 by former Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed in a statement issued Tuesday morning that the United States had officially removed the FARC from the list of terrorist organizations
