Sen. Ted Cruz, (R-Texas) introduced legislation to preserve the independence of the Supreme Court. The legal text has the support of several Republican co-sponsors including Mike Braun of Indiana, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Marco Rubio of Florida, Todd Young of Indiana and Rick Scott of Florida.

The document includes an amendment that would prevent the congressional passage of legislation to add more justices to the high court.

“While my Democratic colleagues shamelessly discuss expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court, this legislation and constitutional amendment ensure that we prevent either party from wielding the Supreme Court as a political tool for their own gain,” Cruz said in a statement.

“I urge my colleagues to defend the fundamental freedoms of their constituents, their religious liberty, free speech and Second Amendment rights, and quickly adopt and pass these proposals to prevent the packing of the Court,” he continued.

After the death of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’, some Democrats suggested they would like to expand the size of the court. If sucessful, this legislation would put an end to that idea.
