Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) believes that Britney Spears’ conservatorship, to which she has been subjected for the past 13 years and which she herself has described as “abusive,” is “ridiculous and unjustifiable,” the senator told Stuart Varney on Fox Business Live on Thursday.

“I am unequivocally in the #FreeBritney field,” Cruz said. “She’s a 39-year-old woman, she’s a grown woman, and yet for a dozen years the California courts have had her in a conservatorship where she can’t make basic decisions about her life. She can’t access her finances, she can’t make her own healthcare decisions, her father runs her life.”

Cruz explained that legal conservatorship is an extraordinary measure, “Conservatorship is an extraordinary step. It’s designed for people who is very, very elderly, for people who have very diminished mental capacity, something like advanced Alzheimer’s. Then, conservatorships can have an important function. None of that is true with Britney Spears” he remarked.

The senator found a conservatorship of that magnitude inconceivable for a person who “She’s touring, she has sold hundreds of millions of dollars worth of records and concert tickets during the time she’s been under the conservatorship” and said he thinks it is an “abusive process.”

The Republican also devoted an entire episode of his podcast, Verdict with Ted Cruz, to discussing with Michael Knowles the #FreeBritney movement and the legal conservatorship that dominates the pop icon’s life and finances.

After a lengthy legal battle against her father, the Los Angeles Superior Court finally granted Britney Spears her first victory on Wednesday, when it allowed her to choose former federal prosecutor Mathew Rosengart as her new attorney.
