Republican Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), speaking at Turning Point USA 2021 being held in Tampa, Florida, urged President Joe Biden to “stand up” and support the people of Cuba, who have been victims of abuses and arbitrary detentions in recent days, following the July 11 protests, in which they decided to take to the streets clamoring for freedom.

“They want to be free communism is evil, Joe Biden should stand up and say we stand with the people of Cuba, the communist dictatorship is evil,” the senator said.

The Cuban-born Republican, during the meeting with young conservatives attending Turning Point USA 2021, also accused the Biden administration of being inconsistent in the face of the facts in Cuba.

“You know I gotta say the Biden administration has really been incoherent when it comes to Cuba. In the first thing that they put out they said the people in Cuba are exercising their right to peaceful protests. Now of course they don’t have a right to peaceful protest in a communist dictatorship, and the Cuban thugs right now, beating them off they’re thrown in prison, they’re torturing them and they’re killed,” Cruz said.

The Republican senator reiterated that the protests on the island are not due to the COVID-19 cases: “They also suggested the reason for the protests, was a shortage for COVID, which are people who are ignoring what the protesters are saying they are chanting leaving liberty, freedom, they want to be free.”

Turning Point USA is a non-profit organization founded in 2012 by Charlie Kirk. Since its founding, it has embarked on a mission to build the most organized, active and powerful network of conservative grassroots activists on high school and college campuses across the country.
