Faced with the escalation of the southern border crisis, the Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, issued a “disaster” declaration in the state. This decision was made in order to provide more resources to respond to the increase in migrants.

Abbott denounced the worsening of the southern border crisis

“President Biden’s open-border policies have paved the way for dangerous gangs and cartels, human traffickers, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to pour into our communities,” Abbott said.

“Meanwhile, landowners along the border are seeing their property damaged and vandalized on a daily basis while the Biden Administration does nothing to protect them,” he charged.

Abbott said he is “stepping up” to address the border crisis in the “absence” of the federal government.

“Law enforcement officials were ordered to prosecute illegal immigrants under applicable federal and state criminal laws, including smuggling, human trafficking and illegal entry,” the governor said in a statement.

Since Joe Biden took office as president of the United States the number of migrants increased at the southern border. In April, some 178,000 apprehensions of undocumented migrants, mostly of Central American origin, were recorded. This is the highest number in 20 years, according to official data.
