Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, announced an Executive Order on Tuesday banning the use of vaccination passports in the state. He maintained that the measure is taken to maintain the freedom of citizens.
“Texans shouldn’t be required to show proof of vaccination & reveal private health information just to go about their daily lives,” the governor wrote on Twitter.
He also noted that the state is getting back to normal and that more people are getting vaccinated every day and that they expect to reach 13 million doses provided this week. He highlighted that the vaccination day reduces hospitalizations and deaths. However, he stated that getting the vaccine should always be voluntary and not obligatory.
Texas is not the only one
Texas is not the first state to ban vaccination passports, Florida governor Ron DeSantis indicated last week that they would not be needed. Meanwhile, the federal government is still contemplating the idea of a new immigration document certifying covid-19 vaccination by citizens.
“Under no circumstances will the state be asking you to show proof of vaccination. And I don’t think private companies should do that either,” DeSantis said during a press conference.
Joe Biden’s Democratic administration has been evaluating the measure for several months and has received proposals from companies for the documents. Some Republican governors refuse to adopt the measure because they consider it a violation of individual freedom.
All this takes place in a context in which the United States is undergoing the most important vaccination campaign in recent times.
