The migration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border is accelerating, and the number of children detained has tripled in the last two weeks due to lack of shelter.

A New York Times report revealed that the number of unaccompanied children at the border has increased to 3,250 in the last 15 days. And that more than 1,360 were detained for more than the 72 hours allowed by law.

Although the Biden administration assures the public that “there is no immigration crisis at the southern border of the U.S.,” the truth is that the number of migrants is increasing, and the government’s response is starting to get out of control.

According to the Times, the minors are being held in facilities of the Customs and Border Protection agency, which are actually intended to house adults detainees.

The law specifies that the federal government is required to move unaccompanied minors within three days from border facilities to shelters run by the Department of Health and Human Services, yet that has not yet happened for 1,360 children.

The rule in the case of children is different from the guidelines to be followed with adult migrants, as unaccompanied minors are taken into custody instead of being returned.

The Times states that more than 5,800 minors were found at the border during the first month, an increase of more than 1,000 from October 2020.

Overcrowding and children in detention

According to the New York Times, the Department of Health and Human Services registered slightly more than 8,100 unaccompanied children in shelters having capacity to receive only 838 more infants.

On February 23, it was learned that Biden reactivated an emergency facility that was open for a month in 2019 and has the capacity to house up to 700 children between the ages of 13 and 17.

It remains to be seen what will happen to the abandoned children, since last January 29th a panel of judges in Washington DC allowed U.S. border agents to expel unaccompanied undocumented children who enter the country.

In fact, the Biden administration continues to expel migrant children citing restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biden fails to keep his promise as deportations continue

An article in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that according to Customs and Border Protection, U.S. immigration authorities made 78,000 arrests at the southern border in January. The figure represents a 6% increase over December of last year.

And despite the fact that during his presidential campaign Joe Biden promised not to deport migrants in his first days in office, the new Democratic Administration has already expelled hundreds of immigrants.

An AP report revealed that ICE had recently deported immigrants from at least three countries in January: 15 to Jamaica last Thursday and 269 to Guatemala and Honduras.

Biden, who assembled an executive cabinet similar to Obama’s, could end up following in the footsteps of the former Democratic President. According to the figures, Obama deported more immigrants than any other U.S. president.

The former Democratic president expelled 2.7 million immigrants from the country. Those numbers leave Obama as the President who has deported the most immigrants in the history of the country, almost as many as the combined sum of all his predecessors in the 20th century.
