In this sixth installment of Las Movies, where we analyze the world of culture and entertainment: movies, series, video games, etc., Ignacio M. García Medina tells us about The Mandalorian and how a cultural battle is taking place around its production.

It is an American space western/adventure TV series that premiered on Disney+ in 2019. Set in the Star Wars universe and created by George Lucas, the series is set a few years after the events of Return of the Jedi, and follows a lone gunslinger beyond the reaches of the Republic.

For Ignacio, The Mandalorian is one of the main battlegrounds in the culture war. He explains how the series had become the salvation of Disney’s million-dollar losses from the failure of Star Wars in recent years.

He tells us that “Ever since Disney bought Star Wars they have used it as an ideological platform to promote woke, Marxist and leftist culture. They have brought Star Wars to a point that is full of gender ideology, critical race theory and critiques of capitalism.”

He highlights that, despite the success of the series, it has been the subject of the cultural battle. For example, Carasynthia is a role that would inspire any woman because of her role: a strong, intelligent and feisty woman. However, the actress who plays the ex-soldier, Gina Carano, has been a victim of woke culture. The reason? Carano is a Republican.

On February 10, 2021, she was expelled from Lucasfilm and from the cast of The Mandalorian due to her opinions on social networks, made months ago, where she compared the cancellation culture to the Jewish persecution during Nazi Germany. Among other issues, Carano also reportedly expressed herself in favor of former President Donald Trump.

“Gina Carano is a Republican. As is well known, if you are not a leftist, for feminists, you lose your status as a woman”, comments Ignacio.

Finally, Ignacio believes this is a demonstration that Disney’s priority is to continue promoting its progressive agenda since if they really cared about improving its finances, it would not fire Gina.

Despite this, Ignacio believes it is possible there may be changes that will allow the return of the actress due to the insistence of Jon Favreau, one of the screenwriters who could remain in charge of Star Wars and who considers Gina to be important for the success of the production.

“For Disney, it seems more important the ideological issue and to keep pushing and pushing their political woke agenda. We will have to wait and see what happens. What is undeniable is that not only are the dark side and the light side facing each other within the films, but there is also a cultural battle.”
