On Friday, the Supreme Court decided to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, a ruling that now leaves the legal status of abortion in the hands of each state. In light of the situation, Senator Marco Rubio wrote on his Twitter account that “Today the Supreme Court correctly returned the power to regulate abortion to the states.”

The senator also explained that in the coming days he “will soon introduce a proposal to support mothers and their babies so that every child has a real opportunity to pursue the promise of America.”

What does the ruling against abortion mean?

One of El American’s article explains that “the criminal liability of a woman seeking an abortion or a healthcare professional providing it will depend on the abortion policies her state implements following the Supreme Court decision. There is nothing yet to prevent legislators from passing laws requiring the prosecution of women who sought abortions or doctors who procure them.”

The legal decision Roe v. Wade, which was overturned by the Supreme Court, allowed the right to abortion at the federal level as of 1973. States could regulate it, but not prohibit it before the 24th week of gestation.
