Toddler Killed as Violent Hailstorm Batters Northeast Spain

A toddler died in Spain in the early hours of Wednesday morning after she was struck on the head by a hailstone during a violent storm that hit the country’s northeast, officials said.

Local health authorities said nearly 50 others were injured as hailstones as large as 10 to 11 centimeters (4-4.3 inches) in diameter battered the town of La Bisbal d’Empordà, near Girona in Catalonia, for 15 minutes on Tuesday evening.

They also confirmed that the 20-month-old girl had died from head trauma after she was struck by one of the giant hailstones.

A total of 46 people were treated for injuries resulting from the hailstorm, ranging from light wounds to fractures.

The freak weather event damaged dozens of cars and buildings in the area.

Regional Catalan weather service Meteocat published an image of one of the hailstones that fell on Bisbal d’Empordà measuring 10cm, larger than a standard baseball.

Yellow weather warnings for possible further storms were in place in Catalonia Wednesday, according to Spain’s meteorological service Aemet. EFE
