A judge in New York has sentenced Tony Hernandez, brother of the president of Honduras, to life in prison for drug trafficking. This was reported by the Associated Press news agency. Prosecutors in the Southern District of New York had asked Judge Kevin Castel to give Hernández the maximum sentence, in addition to forfeiting $138.5 million dollars.

Prosecutors in the Southern District of New York asserted in their indictment that Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was a key “co-conspirator” in Tony Hernandez’s scheme, although he has not been charged.

Emily Palmer, a reporter for The New York Times, explained that the prosecutor said Tony Hernandez “along with his brother is at the center of years of state-sponsored drug trafficking.” The prosecution also indicated that the brothers were part of the largest drug trafficking operations in the world.

The Honduran president assured that the news would be “painful” for his family. “For the entire family, the news expected from NY will be painful. And what else can be said about a trial where the testimony of the prosecutors’ principal “cooperator” has now been exposed by the DEA’s own secret recordings as a lie?” he wrote on Twitter.
