Egypt mediated a truce between Israel and Hamas to end 11 days of fighting. The agreement came into force immediately.
The decision was met with celebrations in the streets of Gaza, which had been the hardest hit by the Israeli response to the Hamas attacks.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, welcomed the decision: “I express my deepest condolences to the victims of violence and their loved ones,” he also added in a statement to the press.
Similarly, Guterres commended Egypt and Qatar for their efforts, in coordination with the UN, to help restore calm between Hamas and Israel. He also called on all parties to respect the ceasefire.
“I emphasize that Israeli and Palestinian leaders have a responsibility beyond restoring calm to begin a serious dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict. Gaza is an integral part of the future Palestinian state and no effort should be spared to achieve genuine national reconciliation to end the division,” he explained.
