Rep. Ted Budd, endorsed by President Donald Trump, won the Republican primary for Senate in North Carolina. Budd prevailed in a 14-candidate race, according to projections by various media outlets.

Budd will now face Democrat Cheri Beasley, former chief justice of the state Supreme Court. This is a state where Republicans have won the last four Senate races and the last three presidential elections.

While appearing at the state GOP convention in Greenville, Trump said Budd was a great politician and that he loved North Carolina.

Ted Budd and Trump’s endorsement

Various pundits have asserted that the primary would be a way to gauge the former president’s influence within the party. In that sense, most of the candidates endorsed by Trump have won the Republican elections. Just two weeks ago, J.D. Vance won the Republican primary in Ohio for Senate.

Ted and his wife, Amy Kate, have three children and live in Davie County, NC. According to his official website, he has an MBA from Wake Forest University and a Master’s in Theology and Educational Leadership from Dallas Theological Seminary.
