Former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) showed his support for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of the October general elections in Brazil, in which he is seeking re-election.
“The ‘tropical Trump’, as he is affectionately called, has done a great job for the wonderful people of Brazil,” he said in a message through his social network Truth Social.
Trump recalled that during his time in the White House no other leader called him as much as Bolsonaro did seeking tax and customs cuts, trade renegotiations or a strengthening of anti-drug and border policies “to put ‘the bad guys’ in jail.”
“President Bolsonaro loves Brazil beyond all else. He is a wonderful man and has my complete and total endorsement,” he concluded in the message.
With almost three weeks to go to the polls, Bolsonaro is at a disadvantage according to pollsters, against socialist Lula da Silva.
Despite what is predicted to be a comfortable victory for the socialist, his party challenged Bolsonaro’s candidacy for the October 2 elections on Thursday. With the intention of having the Superior Electoral Court declare the current president “ineligible”.
