Former President Donald Trump said on Thursday that if the women’s soccer team headed by “a radical group of Leftist Maniacs” had “respected the national anthem” at the Tokyo Olympics, instead of the bronze medal, it would have won the gold medal.
The U.S. women’s national soccer team won bronze after beating Australia (3-4), suffering until the end.
In a mailed statement Trump lashed out at the players who did not stand for the anthem in Tokyo, whom he referred to as “woke.”
“Everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has,” the former president said.
While he appreciated that there were some “patriotic” players who stood for the anthem, he indicated that more athletes who “respect our country and our national anthem” are needed.
Trump recommended replacing the “wokesters” to Patriots to start winning again.
