American President Donald Trump had the opportunity to leave the White House through the main door. However, assaults on the Capitol, allegations of voter fraud, and accusations against his own supporters overshadowed what came to be called “one of the best governments in the United States.” Trump’s arrogance buried everything he did.

Unfortunately, Trump’s legacy – his great economic, social, and foreign policy achievements – could be forgotten after recent events that shattered his credibility. The president sent a message of frustration at allegations of electoral fraud but never provided any hard evidence.

The American people believed in his word and went out to fight for what they believed to be “their truth.”

After not trusting the electoral system, Georgia’s Republican population avoided going out to vote in a decisive election that ended up giving the Democratic Party a majority in the Senate. In a single day, the Republican Party, but especially the country, was severely hit by riots on Capitol Hill that ended with four dead and American morale on the ground.

Renowned Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley said that President Trump’s arrogance left his legacy “in tatters”: “I don’t think there has ever been a lower moment for the presidency of the United States,” he said.

Trump’s arrogance destroyed what he had built

Trump’s performance during his four years in the White House was good: he appointed three justices to the Supreme Court, approved permanent funding for historically black colleges and universities, achieved record unemployment figures for both African Americans and Latinos; he achieved the lowest unemployment rates recorded in the last 50 years and the lowest poverty figure on record.

In 2018, the GDP expanded by 2.9% and in 2019 by 2.3%, figures far higher than those of other industrialized countries.

He also distinguished himself as a pro-life president, and ended funding for groups that perform and promote abortion abroad.

Trump achieved a new free trade agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada; he left the Nuclear Agreement with Iran, withdrew from the Paris Accord and retracted concessions to Cuba.

In relation to the coronavirus pandemic, Trump was able to mobilize resources to respond effectively, ensured immediate clearance of hospitals and timely deliveries of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators. He also achieved the production of vaccines in record time.

However, each of these achievements was overshadowed yesterday. The President was unable to reverse the damage he had done to the point where his own Cabinet, his supporters, and his closest advisors decided to disassociate themselves from him and his tiresome discourse on electoral fraud.

A shattered administration, a backdoor exit

In just hours, Trump’s management reached its most critical level. Mike Pence, the Vice President of the United States, who had been his right-hand man, decided to turn his back on him. He spoke on behalf of the Constitution, decided to support the transition and the election of Biden, and even stopped following the president on social media.

A Daily Wire report revealed that Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma had a “long talk” with Pence the night before the riots. The vice president said he felt betrayed by Trump after he attacked him over Electoral College certification.

“I’ve known Mike Pence forever,” Inhofe said Tuesday night, according to Tulsa World. “I’ve never seen Pence so angry as he was today,” the senator said.

That’s because before the violent assault on the Capitol, Trump had already fought with his biggest allies. The AG Bill Barr, whom he appointed, was called a traitor, as was the Supreme Court and Pence. As the days passed, the president seemed to be left alone, a victim of his arrogance and an ego that did not allow him to accept his electoral defeat. Obviously, there were irregularities in the elections; however, he never knew how to prove the fraud he denounced so much, neither before the courts nor before the American people.

The violent assault on the Capitol left four dead and destroyed the strength of his government. According to Bloomberg, the National Security Council’s main officers, in addition to several members of the White House, are considering resignation.

Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff to the first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, as well as three other members of the president’s cabinet, presented their resignations early Thursday morning. So did White House social secretary Anna Cristina Niceta.

Also, White House assistant press secretary Sarah Matthews is the fourth person in the Trump administration to resign from her post.

In addition, dozens of Republicans, unlike the president, decided to accept the transition.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s speech shortly before the protesters stormed the building advising his colleagues not to oppose the vote count was the biggest speech of his career, and he asserted that in Biden’s certification, “there is no remote evidence of illegality.”

Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul followed suit, saying that forcing Trump’s victory via Congress would break with the democratic methods that had been practiced since the beginning of the Republic.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Trump, who could now face a Democratic-driven impeachment. It is now up to Vice President Mike Pence, who, unlike the current president, decided to walk out the White House’s front door.
