In an update to its policies, Twitter banned the publication of photos and videos of private individuals without their prior authorization. According to the new rule, people will be able to request the platform to remove any audiovisual content where they appear if it was published without consent.
“When individuals or an authorized representative notify us that they did not consent to the sharing of their private image or video, we will remove it,” reads a post about the measure on the platform’s blog.
The ban does not apply to public figures if the media and the tweet are of public interest, but content showing those people can be removed if the site determines that it has been shared “to harass, intimidate or use fear to silence them.”
The social network clarifies that it will continue to process images containing the nudity of public figures under its non-consensual nudity policy.
Twitter clarifies that if the image or video is publicly available, is being covered by media outlets or “adds value to public discourse,” it may be allowed to remain on the site.
The company also notes that people can share images of private individuals in a crisis situation to help them, and that could pass security screening.
The move, which is announced a day after Jack Dorsey resigned as CEO, is part of an expansion of Twitter’s private information policy that the company says is intended to protect its users from physical or emotional harm.
