U.S. Trade Deficit Increases by 9.4% in January

The US deficit in its foreign trade of goods and services rose by 9.4% in January, compared to the previous month, to 89.7 billion dollars, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reported on Tuesday.

In the first month of the year, imports grew by 1.2% over December to $314.1 billion, while exports fell by 1.7% to $224.4 billion.

In January, the trade deficit in goods with China fell by 845 million dollars to reach a value of 33.295 billion dollars.

The negative trade balance with the European Union (EU), on the other hand, increased by 1,692 million dollars to 18,022 million dollars.

January’s rise comes after the 2021 deficit soared by 27% in 2021 from the previous year to $859.1 billion.
