Half of the Ukrainian territory, with an area of 603,700 square kilometers within its recognized borders, is already contaminated by mines or unexploded shells, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigal denounced Friday.

“There arises a huge need to de-mine the territory. More than 300,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory are contaminated with mines or unexploded shells,” he specified on his Telegram account, Unian news agency reported.

Last April 23, the head of the humanitarian directorate of the Kyiv regional military administration, Oleksiy Kuleba, indicated that the demining of that vast region alone will take years.

“The algorithm of action for the reconstruction of the Kyiv region has been determined. We had combats in 35 territorial communities or they were occupied,” he said then to the Dom channel.

He highlighted that “this is a huge territory, which, first of all, must be surveyed, cleared of mines.”

“If we talk about complete demining, we understand that it will take years,” he said.
