Traditionally the first week of January after a presidential election is an opportunity to celebrate institutions in the United States. Today, January 6th, was supposed to be like that. The entire Congress was ready to meet for a ceremony to certify the electoral votes. However, violence hindered the process.
These are unique times. Already the noise of an opaque electoral process was clouding tradition (although allegations of fraud have did not succeed in the courts.) But Trump took advantage of this disappointment to incite the greatest attack we have seen on American institutions in the 21st century.
Yesterday, January 5, Trump tweeted: “I hope the Democrats, and even more importantly, the weak and ineffective RINO section of the Republican Party, are looking at the thousands of people pouring into D.C. They won’t stand for a landslide election victory to be stolen.” Today, at 5 p.m., Washington, D.C., is close to a harsh curfew. It is practically militarized, with the National Guard, the FBI and the police patrolling the streets.
A horde of barbarians stormed and took over the Capitol. The center of the world. The sacrosanct building that houses the legislative branch in what is still the most important country in the world. Invaded. Taken over. Hundreds of demonstrators, shouting “Trump won the elections”, entered and vandalized the imposing building. They reached the doors of the Senate. One even sat at the desk of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. These are unpublished images that show that the United States is not safe from the innate wiles of the third world. This is very disturbing. The Capitol Building was beset by violence.
The Editorial Board was swift and resolute in its condemnation of the violence promoted by groups such as Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Antifa, which was widely encouraged by the Democratic Party. That is why our moral duty today is to condemn the violence wielded by demonstrators who identify with Trump.
There is one thing we must emphasize. Trump called for peace. He asked his supporters to return to their homes. “I know how you feel. But go home. Go home in peace,” he said through a video he posted on his Twitter account. Senator Ted Cruz also said, “Violence is unacceptable. Lindsey Graham, Jim Jordan and Mike Pence did so. So did the entire Senate Republican Party. In fact, virtually all the great figures of the Grand Old Party, the sensible and influential ones, raised their voices against violence. We didn’t see the same thing last summer, when the Democratic Party pimped out the hysteria of its hordes. What a difference.
This is tragic. But that’s not all. Just as dramatic was what happened in Georgia. Both Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock won in their Senate races, giving Democrats control of the upper chamber. We see the perfect storm for the development of America’s greatest enemies. A completely unfavorable scenario has been built for those of us who bet on the preservation of America as a great republic with freedom as its backbone.
The White House and the entire Congress are in the hands of the Democratic Party. A Party taken today by the most radical socialist impulses. Nothing good can come of this.
We are now dependent on the last vestiges of wisdom that remain within the Democratic Party. It is unclear whether the integrity of the Supreme Court will remain intact and that the conservative majority of the justices will become an obstacle to any effort to deconstruct America. It is also vital that we see the strengthening of a rational Republican Party. We must hope that as Thomas Jefferson once said “the great principles of rightness” will win out. January 6th, 2021, was a truly tragic day for the republic.
