United Airlines announced onThursday a commercial agreement with aerospace company Boom Supersonic for the purchase of 15 supersonic aircraft capable of connecting Newark Airport, next to New York, to London in three and a half hours.

Under the terms of the agreement, United will acquire 15 “Overture” model aircraft, once it meets the airline’s “stringent safety, operational and sustainability requirements,” with an option to purchase an additional 35 aircraft.

United said in a statement that “Overture”, which is scheduled to be deployed in 2025, fly in 2026 and carry passengers in 2029, will be the first large commercial aircraft to have zero emissions by running on 100% sustainable fuel (SAF).

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said this decision is part of the company’s strategic plan to build a “more innovative and sustainable” airline.
